i've been on a new music hiatus, in part because my hard drive is now full of music and photos. but tonight i was compelled to stop at favorite discodust, and it was fruitful, as always.
delorean just made my 4th of july weekend a lot better. the ayrton senna mixtape is 35 minutes of dance-pop-bliss. don't know too much about delorean beyond the fact that they're from spain and they can always be counted on for great remixes. but that's good enough for me. this will go a long way toward keeping me happy amidst the inevitable traffic jams ahead. you can stream/download at the link below:
i'm in love with 'hospice', the latest album from the antlers. the music takes you on a bit of a journey - that at least for me, lands somewhere between broken social scene, and talk talk's 'spirit of eden,' which i only recently discovered, but highly recommend for late nights and long drives. my first impressions of the antlers came from the single 'two,' which you can hear below, or here at spinner, where you can listen to the entire album for free - at least for now. 'two' is a simple, but powerful song takes its sweet time getting there, but clearly stands out, along with 'bear,' as one of the album's few truly accessible songs. this an album to take in its entirety...beautiful, atmospheric melodies often take precedence over whispered vocals (try the haunting 'thirteen'). the songs blend together so nicely that i almost wish they hadn't bothered breaking it down into the individual tracks. the antlers - two (via spinner)
a few notches more upbeat than the acoustic tunes i've been listening to lately...this popped up on we're tapes, which admittedly is somewhat low on the list of blogs i try to check out regularly, but not any more. this original track called 'bicycle' (by memory tapes, i think), along with each of the remixes i've had a chance to listen to (by weird tapes, i think), is spectacular. oddly, immediately after i heard this on we're tapes, this was the first track i came across on rcrd lbl, when i went there next on tonight's tour de blog, so i get to post with the fancy widget below. if you start this song, please stay around until it really gets going around 3:00; there's this fantastic guitar that makes me think of the cure (or is that new order), plus a little cfcf, and some air france (which rcrd lbl helped point out), and maybe some empire of the sun in there as well.
i don't think i've written about miike snow yet here, but i'm excited about seeing them in la next week...here they give the ubiquitous passion pit what i'll call a fun-nocuous treatment. i can't get through this song without imagining an arcade. source: neon gold beat company
this track is hosted at boomshine, which i can't read, but it always sounds good. i'm on the wavves bandwagon, perhaps even more after their publicized meltdown in barcelona last week. upon reading the article in pitchfork, i wished i had been at the show. but after watching some, it just seemed annoying. it's a shame they canceled their european tour in the aftermath though. see some for yourself:
hermas zopoula - courez courez buy a 2cd set of hermas zopoula's music at asthmatic kitty, released this week. or download a few more tracks if you dig this one... his day job is a translator for air burkina in burkina faso. [source: aquarium drunkard]
if the first couple singles left any doubt as to the album of the summer...after first listen to 'wolfgang amadeus phoenix', i'm pretty certain the new phoenix album has me locked in for at least a few months. it's fantastic. i was psyched to find rhapsody sharing it in advance of the release. and if you're looking for remixes, check the DLID remix of '1901' and the classixx remix of 'lisztomania' (hosted by pretty much amazing), from the latest kitsune compilation...
i was lukewarm on delphic when i first heard their single 'doubt' a couple months back...they fall somewhere between cut copy and bloc party (who they've toured with), but i didn't find anything that really distinguished them from the innocuous sound of friendly fires (who they've also toured with). i now see the nme blog made this same comparison - only in a positive light - when they described new single 'counterpoint', which i love. anyway, judge for yourself from the kinda-boring vid above (directed by handz, and starring some girl that looks a little like joanna newsom).
is it possible to be any creepier than the original? probably not, but this is pretty hypnotic, and scary, and quite amazing. vid by cornelius tatum, for linus love's 'prom night'
between cfcf and the latest from bell orchestre, i'm in good shape on the instrumental front for the time being. this infectious vid for cfcf's 'you hear colours', directed by tommy boy, draws me in every time, and makes me all lonely like a long distance runner. and is that 3-d in there?
as much as i miss the 80s, this vid for futurecop's 'karate kids', directed by tnuc, makes me grateful i got to live through them at least once...and watch lots of movies in the process.
this also puts me over the top on seeing futurecop! the next time they come through town...even if it means going it alone.
