squeeze me

a flipbook vid for squeeze me from kraak & smaak. this was directed by andre maat and superelectric. k&s are a lot of fun...and they're touring north america this month.

...and their remix of 'medicine' by mark rae is another favorite:

the very best

the very best, is. it's a collaboration between malawian esau mwamwaya and radioclit, and the tracks they've released take lots of familiar sounds (architecture in helsinki, m.i.a., vampire weekend,...) and run with them.

they've got a free mixtape coming out nov 1, with the album set for sometime early next year.

here are my two favorite tracks so far. see if you can listen without smiling.

walking on a dream

jason bentley played 'walking on a dream' by empire of the sun - which seems a 21st century answer to billy ocean's 'caribbean queen' - a few months ago and after a few failed attempts to find these guys online, i completely forgot until tonight, when i saw the vid on hipster runoff.

i love the comparisons between the character in this vid (luke steele) and mugatu from zoolander. hilarious. it's also kinda sweet that the guy from pnau (nick littlemore) makes up the other half of this duo.

Walking on a dream
How can I explain
Talking to myself
Will I see again

We are always running for the thrill of it thrill of it
Always pushing up the hill searching for the thrill of it
On and on and on we are calling out and out again
Never looking down I’m just in awe of what's in front of me

Is it real now
When two people become one
I can feel it
When two people become one

Thought I'd never see
The love you found in me
Now it’s changing all the time
Living in a rhythm where the minutes working overtime

Catch me I'm falling down
Catch me I'm falling down

Don't stop just keep going on
I'm your shoulder lean upon
So come on deliver from inside
All we got is tonight that is right till first light

brazilian girls = good time

i'm digging 'new york city' - the new brazilian girls album. nothing groundbreaking here, but this is good, fun music.

'good time' is my (late) summer anthem...

punk rock girl

sometimes i wonder if my life would have been any different if i hadn't chickened out of lip-syncing 'punk rock girl' by the dead milkmen at the spring hill elementary talent show in the sixth grade. i still love this song. thanks to little radio for reminding me.

house of cards

an innovative vid from radiohead...surprise surprise. this also happens to be my favorite track off the album.

the write-up from pitchfork:

Made without video cameras through the use of Geometrics Informatics, a system which 'employs structured light to capture 3D images at close proximity,' and laser-based Velodyne Lidar, director James Frost creates a mathematic virtual world for Radiohead's first official promo music video clip from In Rainbows.

love is noise

woohoo woohoo woohoo...big sound out of the verve on their new single. remix friendly. i don't really get the video though...seems like 4 vids they pieced together. new album, forth, out aug 19.

...and on the topic of the verve, go back and listen to 'a storm in heaven' sometime. the closing track - see you in the next one (have a good time) - is a favorite.

thunderheist

been listening to these guys a bunch of late. the vid that won the contest thunderheist put together for 'jerk it' is pretty hypnotic...and disturbing. directed by that go.

and go go go go on and give suenos dulces a listen...nice rework of sweet dreams

au revoir simone

ok - i like au revoir simone...great femme indiepop. it took me awhile to get into these girls, but the rac mix of 'sad song' got me convinced. i'm really digging the synths. put your wayfarers on and enjoy.

the video for 'sad song' is pretty solid too. directed by disposable television

and wikipedia tells me their name was inspired by pee wee's big adventure. love that.

don't let the sun go down on your grievances
respect love of the heart over lust of the flesh
do yourself a favor: become your own savior
and don't let the sun go down on your grievances

and when you wake up in the morning
you'll have a brand new feeling
and you'll find yourself healing
so don't let the sun go down on your grievances

cut copy on fleetwood mac and...au

i can't stop listening to the new cut copy...and today i heard their amazing remix of 'never forget' by fleetwood mac. like all good remixes, i'll never again hear the original without thinking it's a step slow. here's the track, along with 'unforgettable season' off their new album.

a more upbeat and tribal sound from sigur ros on their new single: gobbledigook...get it for free and check out the nude video on the sigur ros site. this is another video collaboration with arni & kinski, the guys from gusgus that also directed a few other vids for sigur ros. their vids for glosoli and hoppipolla are too good not to watch if you've never seen them.

didier in son of rambow

i'm fully into my third swing thru 80s-mania. i can't pinpoint a single cause, but maybe it's the fact that my wayfarers are just about the only pair of shades i can't lose. or the fact that the every time i listen to the new m83, i get taken into some other, even cooler john hughes film i never even knew existed. or maybe it's my excitement about next weekend's graffiti rock at bay to breakers. i could go on, but i saw son of rambow last weekend, and though it didn't live up to my lofty expectations, the 80s soundtrack did. some familiar but favorite tracks from the cure (close to me), siouxsie and the banshees (peek-a-boo) and nu shooz (i can't wait) to name a few. the movie is worth seeing by the way - if only for the ambiguous french exchange student, didier, who is the coolest teenager i've seen on film since john hughes' heyday. clearly a front-runner for halloween 2008.

Clip from SON OF RAMBOW - Just Can't Get Enough

the black ghosts

check out the black ghosts. this is the newish project for simon lord of simian (pre mobile disco). i heard these guys on kcrw last night, and i like what i've heard so far. 'any way you choose to give' is a good starting point. the teenagers remix of 'face' hits some nice 80s synths too.

santogold

you can add me to the santogold bandwagon...a lot of mia in there, some karen o, and i swore i was listening to a different version of tegan and sara's 'walking with a ghost' the first time i heard l.e.s. artistes, but i still like her. check starstruck and the xxxchange remix of l.e.s. artistes.

amina

i was lucky enough to see amina open for sigur ros at the paramount in oakland a few years ago. this video from icelandic television does a good job of capturing the experience.

and on the subject of sigur ros - i can't wait to see HEIMA (or to visit iceland after seeing this trailer)

http://www.heima.co.uk/video/

hindsight

from artist r luke dubois

"Hindsight is Always 20/20 takes the State of the Union address from each presidency and sorts them according to word frequency, generating a Snellen eye chart for each president, with the more frequent words in larger typeface at the top of the chart and the less frequent words towards the bottom. The 66-member word lists for each presidency are designed to draw out the most unique and contemporary vocabulary used by the president in his speeches; words that appear in the majority of speeches (e.g. "united", "states", "the", "his", "her", "am") are cancelled out, as are any words which appear in a previous administration's chart. As a result, the list contains words that are not only important in a given presidency but also au courant in terms of lexicon and contemporary context."

Cinematic Orchestra 'To Build a Home' - Live At The Barbican

Familjen - Det snurrar i min skalle

Since Pitchfork posted the 50 best videos of 2007, I've been more than a little obsessed with this video by Johan Soderberg for Sweden's Familjen.

Johan Soderberg: http://www.soderberg.tv/
Familjen: http://www.myspace.com/familjen

The lyrics:

I….started a fire for you
and now the whole forest is on fire
Now….I know what you are going to say
and it feels just like the first time
Come….let’s show them that it’s us two
but everyone already knows
Out….you run away with me
yeah can you hear them singing
*seizure*

As if….everything was predetermined
as the earth revolving round the sun
Who….would have been able to take my place
he simply doesn’t exist
They….talk of something wonderful
I’m there to tell the story
Large….larger than I ever imagined
the inside of my head is spinning
*seizure*
*repeat verse 1*
